Media Technologies and Civil Society

Research on Media, Technologies and Civil Society is focused on developing a better understanding of the interface between social, cultural and technological change.  Through theoretically informed and practice based social research, the contexts and consequences of new and emerging media for citizens and civil society are examined and critiqued. The research aims to broaden academic and popular debate on digital inclusion, media literacy, creative technologies and digital culture, to frame emerging knowledge society and e-inclusion debates and policy, and help develop a dynamic, technology-literate civil society.

The research draws on the research strengths and diversity of schools and research centres within Applied Arts in DIT: Centre for Social and Educational Research (CSER), Sociology, Digital Media Centre and School of Media. The Digital Inclusion Research Team works in tandem with DIT’s Community Links and Digital Communities programmes, exploring digital inclusion from the perspectives of individuals and communities. Digital inclusion research is responsive to community development needs and facilitates greater participation in education, employment and democratic processes through relevant and innovative ICT (information and communication technology) applications.
